Ralph Earl (May 11, 1751 to August 16, 1801) was an American painter known for his portraits, of which 183 copies are known. He also painted six landscapes including the Niagara Falls.

Ralph Earl was born in Massachusetts. Around 1774 he worked as a portraitist in New Haven (Connecticut). In fall 1774, he married in Leicester (Massachusetts) to his cousin Sarah Gates. The couple had a daughter shortly after, but Earl left them and returned to New Haven. Like many artists of his day, Earl was self-taught. In 1775, he visited the site of the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the first War of Independence. Unlike his father who was a patriot, Ralph Earl was a loyalist. With the engraver Amos Doolittle, he drew the battles of the Revolutionary War. He fled to England in 1778 and entered the London studio of Benjamin West. He painted portraits of the king and several British notables. He moved to Norwich and married Ann Whiteside. In 1785 or 1786, Earl returned to the United States with his new wife. He made portraits of Timothy Dwight, Governor Caleb Strong, Roger Sherman and other notables. He signed a portrait of Roger Sherman, to whom he gave the impression of solemnity and integrity through a Republican mastery of space. In 1786 he was imprisoned for debt and released two years later. He died in Bolton (Connecticut) in 1801, perhaps because of alcohol.
