 Daniel Huntington (4 Octobre, 1816 - Avril 19, 1906), artiste américain, est né à New York, New York, le fils de Benjamin Huntington, Jr. et de la Foi Trumbull Huntington, son grand-père paternel était Benjamin Huntington, délégué à la Deuxième Congrès continental des États-Unis et le premier représentant du Connecticut.
De 1833 à 1835 il a étudié au Hamilton College à Clinton, New York, où il a rencontré Charles Loring Elliott, qui a encouragé de Huntington pour devenir un artiste.
En 1835, il a étudié à la New York University avec Samuel FB Morse, et produit "Un politicien Bar-Room» et «Un Toper Asleep." Il a d'abord exposé son travail à la National Academy of Design en 1836. Par la suite, il peint des paysages dans la tradition de la Hudson River School, et en 1839 est allé à Rome, Florence et Paris avec son ami et élève de Henry Peters Gray. A son retour en Amérique en 1840, il peint "Dream Mercy" sa peinture allégorique, qui lui apporta la célébrité et a confirmé son intérêt pour des sujets d'inspiration. Il a également peint des portraits et a commencé à l'illustration du Voyage du Pèlerin, et en 1844, il retourna à Rome.
De retour à New York vers 1846, il a consacré son temps surtout à l'art du portrait, mais il a peint de nombreux genres, religieux et sujets historiques. De 1851 à 1859, il était en Angleterre. Il a été président de l'Académie nationale de 1862 à 1870, puis à nouveau en 1877-1890. |
